Thirukkural

Todays post is about a well known n most obvious thing.

Thirukkural – one of the greatest books in the world.

Thirukkural means sacred couplets. It has been treated as a Bible in Tamilnadu, India. Written some 2000 years back (BC) still its content is relevant, it is applicable to all countries, all religions and ALL TIMES. It has been eulogized as a directory of code of conduct and ethics to humanity. It gives the code how to behave and act in socio, political, religious and family circles

Thirukkural has been translated to many languages of the world. For the complete work in English version, just click here,

(You can find many resources of Thirukkural by searching in the net)

Thirukkural consists of 1330 couplets in 133 chapters, each chapter comprising of 10 couplets. The 133 chapters had been divided in to three parts. First 38 chapters deals on Dharma or virtue, next 78 chapters deals on wealth and governance, last 25 chapters on love.

In my school days they didn’t give importance to teach love in Thirukkural. So, we shall see some couplets (just a sample) from love part – This may be due to my age
(Mind, it’s written 2000 years back)

The nectarine fluid, in which are stepped the milk-white teeth, of my lady of gentle speech
Is like the delicious mixture of milk and honey (1121, on love)

All the five-sense delights of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch are experienced together,
Only in the embrace of this resplendent damsel. (1101, on love)

The intimate love between this artless damsel and me is very much like,
The natural union of body and soul. (1122, on love)

Rapture at the thinking, and delight at the very sight
Are only features of love, and not of wine. (1281, on love)

More delicate than the softest of the flowers is genuine love, only a few approaches it
With deserved gentleness to enjoy its blissful promise. (1289, on love)

Where the eyes have reached an understanding between themselves,
Words of mouth are quite superfluous. (1100, on love)

My passionate love, while it lasted, did rage like open seas, but with enforced separation,
Resultant grief goes fathoms deeper than the ocean. (1166, on love)

Favourites in virtue, wealth and governance will be posted in duecourse.
